Beloit College’s mission states that we wish to empower students to lead fulfilling lives which includes public contribution in a diverse society. To be able to adequately prepare our students to make public contributions, we have to help them see their own position in American society. We need to think about the ways our cultures have borrowed, shared, and even, stolen from each other here in the United States. The best way for us to be a stronger nation is to take stock of what a diversity of ethnicities has and will continue to offer us. Only by teaching our students how to listen, see, and comprehend the contributions made by writers, musicians, dramatists, dancers, artists, scientists, philosophers, politicians, and religious leaders from all walks of life can we truly understand our own country and find ways to strengthen its future.
